The greatest moment in Australian football history was the Socceroos' qualification for the 1974 FIFA World Cup. For the first time, Australia would be participating in the Finals. The tournament was held in West Germany, where the Socceroos would play their three group stage matches in Hamburg and Berlin against East Germany, West Germany and Chile.
Coach Rale Rasic had prepared the team well. Rasic was unwavering when it came to discipline and structure. His team was expected to be embarrassed by the might of the Germans and South Americans. However, the outcome was far from embarrassing. The Socceroos lost two out of three matches but gained the respect of the world by competing well above expectations.
Twenty-two pioneering young men will forever be remembered as will the year, 1974. This design features the entire squad - all 22 players - in a Panini-style layout, embracing a generation of heroes. Our history.
