AC Milan's 24-man squad travelled to Australia in June 1993, which included 12 Italian and six foreign internationals valued at over $240 million. It was the Milan giant's second tour of Australia and the first visit by a top Italian club since Juventus in 1984.
In the nineties, Italy's Serie A was considered the toughest and most glamorous domestic competition in the world. AC Milan held a 56-game win streak over a two-year period, which came to an end in April. AC Milan had won 13 Serie A titles, four Italian Cups, four European Champions Cups, two European Cup Winners' Cups, two European Super Cups and three World Club Championships. A list of major honours to rival any of Europe's best.
The two matches played (Sydney and Melbourne), were seen as preparation for the Socceroos' 1994 FIFA World Cup qualifiers against Canada (and eventually Diego Maradona's Argentina). Coach Eddie Thomson fielded Australia's best in the likes of Mark Bosnich, Ned Zelic, Paul Wade, Robbie Slater and Frank Farina.
This many world class names on one t-shirt is rare indeed.
