"You can go through a career and achieve a lot, but not many will have a world record, so I am grateful and proud to have it. I bring out my many copies of the record books whenever I get the chance!"
On April 11 2001, Australia beat American Samoa 31-0 in a 2002 World Cup qualifier to set the record for the biggest professional international win to date. Until that point, the World Cup record was held by Iran thanks to their 19-0 win over Guam in 2000.
The result has gone down in football folklore. Even more so, the achievement of one particular player, Archie Thompson.
Thompson scored 13 goals - a world record. He only had two international caps and one goal for Australia prior to the match. The individual World Cup record was seven, initially set by Australia's Gary Cole in a 1981 match against Fiji, and then equalled by Iran's Karim Bagheri against the Maldives.
It took 10 minutes for Australia to score the first goal. By half-time, it was 16-0. The world record score fell on 65 minutes. Of course, it was the same player who scored the landmark goal.
This design pays due respect to one of Australian football's most interesting players.
