The year 1922 marks the official point of Australia's full international status. After the Great War, journeys across the Tasman resumed with teams made up of amateurs who were able to support themselves on a tour of more than six weeks. The first Australian XI featured players from the eastern states. Hence, Australia played in a combination of the blue of New South Wales and maroon of Queensland - not green and gold.

Australia began a tour of New Zealand, starting in Wanganui on 27 May with a 3-1 victory against the local association and ended at Palmerston North on 12 July, when their Manawatu opponents were thrashed 5-0. Australia won nine of its 14 matches, lost four and drew one. However, in the three tests, New Zealand remained unbeaten, winning two games 3-1 and drawing the third 1-1.

This design symbolises where it all began and includes the date of Australia's first officially recognised international (against New Zealand in Dunedin) across the back: 17 June 1922.
