In December 1969, after overcoming South Korea, Japan and Rhodesia, Australia lined-up against Israel for a place in the 1970 FIFA World Cup to be held in Mexico. An own-goal by Australia's David Zeman would give Israel a 1-0 lead to take to Sydney for the second leg.
A crowd of 32,500 made their way to the Sydney Sports Ground to see Australia overturn the deficit. Australia played well and fought hard in the first-half only for Israel's defence to prove too strong to breach. Nil-all at the break. The second-half saw few real chances. Israel's star, Mordechai Spiegler, scored on the break with 12 minutes remaining. The aggregate was 2-0. Disaster for Australia.
Two minutes from time Australia's number eight, Johnny Watkiss, scored to earn a 1-1 draw. The Israelis progressed to the Finals 2-1, leaving Australia's dream in tatters.
Four years later, it would be a different story.
