It may sound unbelievable but in 1974 Manchester United were relegated from England's First Division. Manager Tommy Docherty had successfully managed to win promotion a season later and United were back. Household names such as George Best, Denis Law and Bobby Charlton had left the club.
Docherty's squad were jockeying for positions and a tour of Australia was the perfect place to see who would be invaluable to start United's return to the big time. United opened the tour on 15 June 1975 against Western Australia in Perth, claiming a 2-1 victory.
The Australian soccer media believed the nation's best should not lose to a Second Division team, even one as prestigious as United. United won 4-0. Lou Macari, Sammy McIlroy, Gerry Daly and Stuart Pearson the scorers.
