In 1958, famous English football club Blackpool toured Australia. The touring party included the great Stanley Matthews, who entertained the Australian crowds in all five matches played against the nation during May. Blackpool won 5-2 at the Sydney Sports Ground, then 8-2 a week later. At the Brisbane Cricket Ground, they came away with a 4-2 victory.
A narrow 1-0 scoreline followed at Adelaide Oval. In the club's final match in front of 30,000 at Melbourne's Olympic Park, the crowd was treated to a seven-goal thriller. Unfortunately for Australia, it was 7-nil - six goals came in the second-half.
Australia's captain, Joe Marston, may have been embarrassed by conceding 25 goals in five games but his side was full of part-timers, trying their best to work together with little preparation. Marston was in a class of his own, having played for Preston North End in the FA Cup Final four years earlier.
