In 1959, Scotland's Heart of Midlothian toured Australia, playing five matches against the Australian national team and two against an Australian XI in Sydney, Wallsend (Newcastle), Brisbane, Melbourne, Adelaide and Perth. The tour was the last to take place before FIFA revoked Australia's affiliation over transfer irregularities with a number of European-born players.
Australia's player/coach, Joe Marston, knew his Scottish opponents would be hard to beat. However, scoring four goals to their 36 (the first three matches ending 7-1) would have displeased him immensely. The two Australian XI matches were played in Wallsend and Perth, ending 6-1 and 9-0 to the Scots respectively.
Hearts would go on to win the Scottish league and cup double under manager, Tommy Walker, in 1960.
