German newspaper, Bild, went to print on 19 June 1974 with a headline to remember: "Australia was brave."
After the Socceroos lost 3-0 to FIFA World Cup favourite, West Germany, the local media began to feel relieved by the fact that the tournament host was through to the next round. Perhaps, more surprising, the media heaped praise on the Socceroos.
Most did not expect much but were impressed by the "Kangaroos" on the field, particularly the team's fighting spirit.
This design is a replica of the Bild newspaper headline.
