Born in London, Francis Awaritefe played for Chelsea Boys Club and non-league sides Sutton United and Barnet, before moving to Australia in 1989. Melbourne Croatia secured his services as a 24-year-old and he quickly became a cult figure, known for his tightly plaited dreadlocks.

Following his four seasons at Melbourne Croatia, Awaritefe played with rivals South Melbourne, Marconi and Sydney United. He finished the 1992-1993 National Soccer League season at South Melbourne as the competition's top goalscorer with 19 goals, earning him a call up by national team coach Eddie Thomson to play two friendlies against South Korea in Seoul. He would make one other appearance for the Socceroos (in 1996), scoring in a 4-1 loss to Japan in Wollongong.

Awaritefe retired in 2001 as the NSL's fourth highest all-time goalscorer with 124 goals in 323 games. He made 33 appearances, scoring nine goals, in 12 consecutive finals series.

Post-retirement on the field, Awaritefe has served as a member of the Professional Footballers Australia Executive Committee and completed a Law degree and post-graduate studies in Business Administration. He was awarded PFA Life Membership in 2000 in recognition of his outstanding contribution to the game and its players. Awaritefe acted as a club delegate and was an instrumental contributor to the original equal opportunity code whilst a player.

In December 2017, Awaritefe was appointed to the board of the worldwide representative organisation of professional footballers, FIFPro. He played an instrumental part in negotiations during the Hakeem al-Araibi case, ultimately ending in his successful release back to Australia.

This design cuts Awaritefe's silhouette as a youthful player and signifies a powerful image of a man who stands proud in upholding the highest standards in player and humanitarian welfare.
