On 27 April 1974, Australia played Uruguay in the second of two international (not so) friendlies at the Sydney Cricket Ground. Ray Baartz, who would have been a certain starter at the 1974 FIFA World Cup in June, suffered a "chop" to the throat from Uruguay's Luís Garisto.
Baartz was taken to hospital only to find out later that he would never play again. Socceroos coach, Rale Rasic, took him to the World Cup anyway.
