Canberra City entered the newly formed National Soccer League, sponsored by Philips, in 1977 as the only team from Australia's Capital Territory. Canberra's home games were played at Manuka Oval, which had the honour of hosting the first-ever NSL match, when Canberra was defeated 3-1 by West Adelaide in front of a crowd of 1,550.
In 1978, the club moved to the newly constructed Bruce Stadium. Canberra was a competitive side, but did not make any noise in the finals. By 1984, the club was relegated to the New South Wales State League.
Australian football icon, Johnny Warren, was involved with the club during its foundation as was his former St George Budapest teammate, Vic Fernandez. This design is based on the Canberra City jersey worn in the Philips Soccer League.
