Lucas Neill was Australia's captain at the 2010 FIFA World Cup in South Africa. Born in 1978, Neill played his junior and youth football in the Northern Beaches of Sydney. He spent two years at the Australian Institute of Sport before signing a contract with Millwall Football Club in England, where he made his debut aged just 17.
After 152 league appearances, Neill joined Blackburn Rovers Football Club in 2001. He would play his first Barclays Premier League match in September. He spent six seasons at Blackburn, making 188 league appearances, before moving to West Ham United Football Club in 2007. He captained the Hammers for one season. In 2009, he was signed by Everton Football Club.
By January 2010, Neill was done with English football and moved to Turkey, joining Australian teammate Harry Kewell at Galatasaray Spor Kulübü. Stints in the United Arab Emirates (Al-Jazira FC, Al Wasl Football Club), Australia (Sydney FC) and Japan (Omiya Ardija) before a return to England (Watford Football Club, Doncaster Rovers Football Club) followed. He amassed 517 national league appearances across almost two decades.
Neill first captained Australia in 2006, after the World Cup. He will be remembered for the Fabio Grosso penalty decision. However, his Socceroos teammates would agree he was the most outstanding player in a green and gold shirt.
From 1996 to 2013, Neill made 96 international appearances - 61 as captain. He holds the record for most appearances as starting captain with the legendary, Peter Wilson.
This design is inspired by Neill's 2010 World Cup away jersey.
