Cheryl Salisbury's international career began in 1994 against Russia. Salisbury represented Australia at the 1995, 1999, 2003 and 2007 FIFA World Cups, the Sydney (2000) and Athens (2004) Olympic Games and the 2006 and 2008 Asian Football Confederation Women's Cup. Overall, Salisbury made 151 A-appearances for the Matildas, scoring 38 goals as a central defender and frequent leader of the squad.

Salisbury played her youth football in Lambton, Newcastle, on the north coast of New South Wales before training at the Australian Institute of Sport in Canberra. Her club career included signing for Japan's Panasonic Bambina and Takarazuka Bunnys, the Memphis Mercury and New York Power in the United States, and Newcastle Jets in Australia's W-League.

In 2009, the year of her retirement, Salisbury was inducted into the Football Federation Australia Hall of Fame. A year later, she was awarded the Professional Footballers Australia Alex Tobin Medal.
