Cindy Heydon was a prolific striker from New South Wales. Heydon possessed match-winning ability and a level of skill rarely witnessed in Australian women's soccer at the time. She made her A-international debut against New Zealand in 1979, now known as the Matildas' first official match, and calmly scored Australia's penalty-kick to force a draw with the Kiwis in 1980.

Heydon captained Australia for the 1981 tour of New Zealand. She played in the first Oceania Cup in 1983 in New Caledonia, scoring a hat-trick in Australia's 13-0 drubbing of Fiji, and a goal in Australia's 5-0 defeat of New Caledonia. She played in Australia's 1984 tour of China, completing 23 internationals with five goals to her name.

In 2002, Heydon was inducted into the Football Federation Australia Hall of Fame.
