Joe Montemurro began the coaching journey at his junior football club, Brunswick Juventus (Zebras) FC. His first major role was as youth coach (Under-21s) in the Victorian Premier league with Green Gully SC. Montemurro, known affectionately as Pep, has had a career trajectory all the way to the top.

Montemurro was appointed head coach of Melbourne Victory FC's W-League team in 2014 after successful stints with various VPL men's teams. The following season, Montemurro joined Melbourne City, becoming the club's youth coach. He then moved into the women's coaching role in the club's inaugual W-League season. They were crowend 2015-16 Premiers. The team made W-League history as they went the entire season undefeated, amassing 42 goals scored and 5 conceded.

After working in an assistant capacity for the men's team in 2016 under John van 't Schip,  he relinquished his W-League coaching role as a result to assist newly appointed coach, Michael Valkanis.

In November 2017, Montemurro made the switch to European football, signing on as Arsenal Women's first team coach. He won his first major trophy, beating Manchester City 1–0, to win the FA Women's League Cup on 15 May 2018.

The attacking style and fluidity of possession instilled by Montemurro has won him many accolades. In 2019, Montemurro was nominated for Manager of the Year at the London Football Awards, alongside Chelsea FC's Maurizio Sarri and Tottenham Hotspur's Mauricio Pochettino. He was the first coach from the FA Women's Soccer League to be nominated.

On 31 March, Arsenal qualified for the UEFA Women's Champions League after a five year absence, with a 1–0 win over Birmingham City FC. In front of a record WSL crowd, Arsenal defeated Brighton & Hove Albion at the Falmer Stadium to secure the WSL title with a round in advance. The season was also capped off with Montemurro winning the WSL League Managers Association (LMA) Coach of the Year.

Another record was broken on 1 December 2019, when Arsenal beat Bristol City Women's FC 11–1. The crowd at Meadow Park witnessed the highest winning margin in the WSL.

On 8 June 2021, Montemurro was appointed head coach of Italian Serie A Femminile side Juventus FC Women. This design marks the work of a young and inspiring Australian coach, whose work in the women's game knows no bounds.
