In 1997, the National Soccer League had a runaway leader going into the finals. Sydney United had dominated the league, featuring some of Australia's growing talent and a few Croatian star imports. Up north, former Socceroos forward, Frank Farina, had taken on the role of player/coach in his home town of Brisbane with the emerging Strikers. Both teams made the NSL Grand Final.
Most neutrals would have bet their house on Sydney United winning, even away from home. The league's leading goalscorer, David Zdrilic, was playing. Coach, Branko Culina, had a stellar season in charge and had achieved all but to lift the trophy. However, it would go horribly wrong.
The Brisbane Strikers came out firing and unsettled Sydney United goalkeeper, Zeljko Kalac, early in the match. For all the chances, the teams went into the break locked at 0-0.
Some things are just meant to be. Two goals in the second-half from Farina and goal machine, Rod Brown, would see the home team crowned champions of Australia in front of over 40,000 fans. It was a match that Queensland football fans would never forget. Farina and his men would celebrate long into the night!
