After topping the First Division in 1962-1963, Everton finished the 1963-1964 English league season in third place behind Liverpool and Manchester United. Everton had a star-studded team, including the likes of Alex Scott, captain Roy Vernon, Brian Labone and Jimmy Gabriel - all internationals.

The Merseyside club arrived in Australia in May 1964 and played eight games in Sydney, Newcastle, Brisbane, Melbourne, Adelaide and Perth - two of which were played against a national selection. Before the tour, the local press was of the opinion that the Australian teams would run Everton close. The gulf in class turned out to be considerable.

It turned out to be an effective tour for the Toffees. The financial success amounted to a profit of estimated to be $72,000. Not bad for 1964.

The match against Australia in Melbourne on 10 May drew 32,453 spectators to Olympic Park. The Toffees thrashed the national selection 8-2. Captain, Roy Vernon, and Jimmy Gabriel both scored hat-tricks, while Derek Temple bagged a brace. Former Austrian international, Herbert Ninaus, scored both goals for the Australians.

On 16 May, it was 5-1 to Everton. The Toffees again showing their superiority against the selection of Australia's best players. Gabriel scored first, only for Ninaus to reply. One-all at the break. However, in the second-half, the Toffees ran away with it. John Morrissey scored twice, and Alex Scott and Colin Harvey added the others.

Australian team coach, Jim Kelly, was thoroughly outplayed. Soccer in Australia was heavily State-based and trying to put together a cohesive team proved too much against such formidable opposition.

This design marks a period in time when soccer was growing in Australia and European clubs were touring as part of their pre-season preparations. Toffees fans will surely appreciate the historical significance.
