After the success of F.K. Rapid's tour in 1955, F.K. Austria made the trip to Australia to play a series of matches, bringing their star players. One such player was inside-right, Leopold Baumgartner, who would later become one of Australia's most successful club performers.

Australia's test team included newly capped goalkeeper, Joe Ruyters, who played his soccer with Victoria's Wilhelmina. Jim Pettigrew from Cessnock at right-back was part of Australia's Olympic squad to compete in Melbourne the year before. Left-back Harry Murdoch played his soccer at Balgownie, being the first representative from the club for 30 years. Halves, Kevin O'Neill and Bob Young, were from Cessnock and Corrimal respectively.

Captain, Joe Marston, was the ever reliable centre-half. A leader of men and F.A. Cup finalist, Marston attracted an Australian crowd. Wallsend's Bruce Morrow played at outside-right, while Olympic representative and native of Queensland, Graham McMillan, occupied the outside-left position.

Spencer Kitching and Jack Lennard were the inside-forwards, and Gordon "Bunny" Nunn in the centre was relied upon to head the attack. Reserves Len Stedman, Bill Williams and Charlie Stewart rounded out the team - all from New South Wales.

During the fifties, Australia adopted a typically British system of play or what was known as the W-M formation. It appears incredibly attacking. However, the play was direct and at times, overly aerial.

F.K. Austria lost the first match to Australia at the Crystal Palace Ground in Wallsend 3-2, before the match at the Sydney Cricket Ground, which ended a whopping 8-3 to the visitors. Australia would meet the Austrian club again in August only to lose 5-1.

This design celebrates the Austrian influence on Australian soccer.
