On 18 November 1984, Australia played Nottingham Forest abroad. Legendary gaffer, Brian Clough, wrote in the match programme that his assistant Ron Fenton had reported favourably on Australia when Forest toured without him. Clough added:
It is nice to be able to reciprocate a little and play hosts to the Australian tourists here this afternoon. Their visit to the City Ground coincides with the fact that we have signed their best player, Alan Davidson, who has only just arrived from Australia.
With or without him, I am certain that the Australians will provide formidable opposition because by all accounts their football has come on in leaps and bounds over the past few years. I know the problems that Bobby Robson's England team had trying to win a match out there last year.
Ron said they are very well organised in their play and he was slightly taken aback by the level of skill they showed. It should be a very interesting afternoon.
Cloughie might have got that wrong. The match ended 0-0.
