In 1968, Australia played a series of three matches against Japan. The first match in Sydney finished square at two-all. Australian soccer hero, John Warren said, "We would have been better off playing in Vietnam or Korea," as the home crowd was quite vocal for the visiting Japanese side.
Next up, Melbourne. Australia won convincingly, three goals to one. A few injuries had taken their toll, forcing Australia's coach, Joe Vlasits, to change his usual 4-2-4 formation to a 4-3-3.
In Adelaide, the final match of the series ended in a 3-1 victory for the visitors. Japan had been predictably admirable opponents in what turned out to be a challenging series for both nations.
