Julie Murray is one of Australia's most accomplished footballers. A pioneer in every sense of the word, Murray was selected to represent her country at the age of 15. She was given the captain's armband to lead the Australian women's national football team into the 1995 FIFA Women's World Cup and again in 1999. In 2000, she led the women's Olympic team in Sydney.
Murray became the first Australian woman to sign a professional football contract in 1990, when Denmark's Fortuna Hjørring came calling. Her greatest season was spent in the United States. In 2001, the San Jose (Bay Area) CyberRays won the inaugural Women's United Soccer Association championship in a penalty shootout - Murray scored the winner. She was the club's Most Valuable Player and top goal scorer.
Held in the highest regard, along with players like Mia Hamm, Murray received a number of award nominations throughout her career. She was named in the inaugural FIFA World All-Stars team in 1999, and appointed a FIFA Ambassador to women's football in 2005.
In 67 appearances for the Matildas (1987-2000), Murray scored 19 goals. This design marks her championship-winning season at the CyberRays - a moment that inspired a generation of Australian women playing their football back home.
