On 22 June 2006, the Gottlieb-Daimler-Stadion in Stuttgart played host to the FIFA World Cup Group F match between Australia and Croatia. After a 3-1 opening match victory against Japan, Australia lost 2-0 to Brazil but were not disgraced. A result against Croatia stood between the Socceroos and the knockout phase of the tournament.

The weather was balmy. Kick-off was late (9:00pm). After just two minutes, Croatia took the lead. A free-kick against captain, Mark Viduka, was rifled in by Darijo Srna. One-nil. Seven minutes from the break, the Socceroos earned a penalty-kick and Craig Moore did not flinch. One-all.

If the Socceroos were going to progress out of the group, it was to be a battle to the end. A shot by Croatia's Niko Kovač on 56 minutes seemed an easy catch for Socceroos goalkeeper, Zeljko Kalac. However, Kalac fumbled and the ball trickled into the back of the net. Two-one.

For the Socceroos, a one-goal defeat was not enough. They needed at least a draw. Up stepped Harry Kewell.

On 79 minutes, Kewell realised a dream. A cross into the penalty box from Mark Bresciano found Kewell - he controlled the ball with his predominant left foot and put it away with his right. Although, it did look offside, it was given by referee Graham Poll. Two-all. The Socceroos celebrated an unprecedented moment in history.

Poll later infamously showed three yellow cards (and a red) to Croatia's Josip Šimunić, after he had already dismissed Dario Simic and the Socceroos' Brett Emerton. At close to midnight, the Socceroos had secured second place in Group F. Job done.

This design shines a light on Harry Kewell at the 2006 World Cup and his greatest goal in green and gold.
