The Laws of Association Football (the "Game") are the codified rules that help define how the sport is played, dating as far back as 1863. They are the only Laws of association football endorsed by the Fédération Internationale de Football Association (FIFA). FIFA does not control the Laws of football, that being the responsibility of the International Football Association Board, since 1886.
The Laws mention the number of players a team should have, the game length, the size of the field and ball, the type and nature of fouls that referees may penalise, the frequently misinterpreted Offside Law, and many other Laws that define the sport.
During a match, it is the task of the referee to interpret and enforce the Laws of the Game, with the assistance of other match officials.
Without them, there would be no football.
