Mathew Leckie, 28, was born in Melbourne and only began playing football at age 11. After a successful season at Bulleen Lions, Leckie was signed by A-League club, Adelaide United. His two seasons in South Australia coincided with solid performances for the national team Under-20s.
In 2011, Leckie was signed by Borussia Mönchengladback, making nine appearances for the first team. In 2012, he was loaned to FSC Frankfurt, then signed for the club the following season. In two seasons at Frankfurt, Leckie appeared 64 times and scored 19 goals.
FC Ingolstadt 04 offered Leckie a contract he could not refuse in 2014. He would spend three seasons with the club, scoring 10 goals in 94 matches. His role would vary from right-wing to right-wing-back, proving a versatile option for his manager.
In 2017, Leckie signed for Hertha BSC and has been in-and-out of the team with injuries and mixed success. However, he continues to push for a starting place every week, as an important member of the squad.
An integral part of the Socceroos' attack, Leckie has been involved in every major tournament for the national team since his debut in 2012. In 2014, he proved an exciting forward option for Socceroos coach, Ange Postecoglou, and appeared in his first FIFA World Cup. The following year, he won the AFC Asian Cup on home soil, and has since participated in the FIFA Confederations Cup and World Cup in Russia.
This design celebrates the Australian's success in Germany.
