Lucas Neill not only captained his country, but took on the role at club level in what was a long and successful career - over 500 professional appearances. Neill started his football journey at Sydney's Manly United before leaving for the Australian Institute of Sport in Canberra. He then signed a contract with England's Millwall, one of South-East London's most talked about clubs, where he played for six seasons.
In 2001, Neill moved to Blackburn Rovers, where he led the side in arguably the toughest domestic competition in the world. His time at Rovers was without doubt the highlight of his club football experience.
He became a journeyman with stints at West Ham United, Everton and Galatasaray. Even signing for United Arab Emirates clubs Al Jazira and Al Wasl before returning to Australia to play briefly for Sydney FC.
Neill was committed to sustaining his place in the Socceroos squad for as long as possible, which influenced his decisions to find competitive football. His Socceroos run ended in 2013 with 96 caps, amid controversy. He was accused of hanging around too long and was not in Ange Postecoglou's plans for the national team.
What is not up for debate is his unwavering contribution to the golden generation of Socceroos, his leadership and immense pride for the shirt. He may be remembered for giving away a penalty in the Socceroos' Round of 16 match at the 2006 FIFA World Cup against Italy, but his defensive skills were solid more often than not.
He will go down in history as one of the greatest Australians to wear the armband.
