Ella Mastrantonio is known as the "Maestro" for her distinguished conducting from central midfield. Mastrantonio is a popular figure in Australian women's football, particularly among young fans. She has spent most of her career playing in the W-League with three stints each at Perth Glory and Melbourne Victory, winning a Championship and Premiership with the latter.

In November 2019, Mastrantonio joined Western Sydney Wanderers. After a resurgence in form, she was signed by Bristol City. The FA Women's Super League is considered one of the toughest women's football competitions in the world. Unfortunately for City, the club was relegated at the end of the 2020/21 season, with Mastrantonio moving on to join Italy's S.S. Lazio Women 2015.

Mastrantonio earned a long-awaited recall to the Australian women's national team, the Matildas, 13 years after her last international cap. Her first coming in 2008, aged 16, against Japan. She is looking to continue her push for a regular Matildas spot heading into the 2023 FIFA Women's World Cup, co-hosted by Australia.

No matter where Mastrantonio plays, home or abroad, her technical ability is easy on the eye. Perhaps, her admiration for Italy's Andrea Pirlo helped.
