Manchester City's chairman, Mr A. V. Alexander, welcomed Rale Rasic's Australian National XI to Maine Road on Wednesday, 25 November 1970. Alexander's match programme note read:
Tonight, we are privileged to play hosts to the National Touring Team of Australia in one of their only two matches in England. The men from Down Under, already famous for their rugby, cricket and lawn tennis, are making huge strides into the world of soccer and we are proud to be part of it.
I think many of you will tonight be surprised at the level of ability these young men have achieved in such a short time. And I am quite certain you will extend to them the kind of welcome that they gave us when we were there.
City, primarily made up of reserves, defeated the Australian XI 2-0.
