Australian entrepreneur, Rene Rivkin, secured the promotional rights to bring Manchester United to Australia in July 1999. The trip was a great success for both the players and fans. Not so much for governing body, Soccer Australia, who pocketed arguably less than their fair share of the profits. Nevertheless, two matches were played for the Sharp Challenge Cup. One at the Melbourne Cricket Ground, the other at the newly erected 2000 Olympics venue Sydney's Stadium Australia.
United boss Sir Alex Ferguson did not travel nor did superstars David Beckham, Roy Keane and Paul Scholes. Assistant coach Steve McClaren took charge of the Red Devils and came away with two victories with relative ease, not conceding a single goal.
The tour will be remembered on a positive note for Australian goalkeeper Mark Bosnich's place in the United goal, having been signed to replace Peter Schmeichel after he left the club following their treble success. However, an incident involving United striker Andy Cole and up-and-coming Socceroos defensive-midfielder, Simon Colosimo, dominated the headlines in Sydney. Cole's aggressive (and late) tackle on Colosimo tore the anterior cruciate and medial ligaments in his knee. He was stretchered-off and pursued legal action in the months following, which he later dropped.
Colosimo would recover, but alleged contract negotiations with European clubs prior to the incident never eventuated and no one will know whether he could have gone on to become part of the golden generation of Socceroos. He made six appearances for Manchester City during the 2001/2002 Premier League season, but ultimately returned home to continue his career.
This design will be particularly popular with Australian United fans with fond memories of the Red Devils winning the Premier League, FA Cup and UEFA Champions League in 1999.
