In 1954, 11-year-old Manfred Schaefer emigrated to Australia with his family from Germany. He began his senior career at Blacktown, where he spent three seasons before moving to Budapest (St George), the club that would turn him into a legend of Australian soccer.
From 1967 to 1974, Schaefer was an integral part of the national team. He was a member of the squad sent to Vietnam in 1967 to play in the Friendly Nations tournament and went on to form an unbreakable partnership in the centre of defence with Socceroos captain, Peter Wilson.
At St George, he won the premiership in 1972 and was on three grand final-winning sides (1967, 1971 and 1974). Schaefer received New South Wales Player of the Year honours in 1972 - his St George side would later contribute the majority of players to the 1974 FIFA World Cup squad.
Schaefer worked as a milkman during the day, trained and played in the evenings and weekends, only to realise his dream: to represent Australia in the country of his birth at the World Cup. By divine intervention, the Socceroos were drawn against East Germany, West Germany and Chile. When Schaefer went up against the likes of Franz Beckenbauer, Paul Breitner, Jupp Heynckes, Gerd Müller and Uli Hoeness, he knew he had reached the summit.
The German-Australian defender would later go on to enjoy a successful coaching career with St George, Sydney Olympic, Brunswick Juventus, APIA Leichhardt, Sydney United, Marconi Stallions and Adelaide Sharks. However, he will always be remembered as one of the heroes of 1974.
