Mark Schwarzer is statistically Australia's most successful player. Schwarzer has 626 national league appearances to his name and 110 international caps. His record is unrivalled.

In 1990, Schwarzer made his debut for Marconi in the National Soccer League. He would go on to win a championship with the club in 1993. After 58 appearances, he made his move overseas, joining German club SG Dynamo Dresden in 1994 before a switch to 1. FC Kaiserslautern the following season.

Most Australian football fans know Schwarzer for his outstanding career in England. Over two decades, he played for Bradford City (1996-1997), Middlesbrough (1997-2008), Fulham (2008-2013), Chelsea (2013-2015) and Leicester City (2015-2016). He made 507 Premier League appearances during that time, playing his last aged 42 years and 152 days.

Schwarzer's rise to international fame came in 1993. The Socceroos played a two-legged tie against Canada for a place in the final round of qualifying for the 1994 FIFA World Cup, only to face a dreaded penalty shootout. Schwarzer was the hero, saving two spot kicks. Little did he know, some 12 years later, he would do the same in a career-defining match.

In 2005, with World Cup qualification at stake, Schwarzer saved two critical penalties against Uruguay at Telstra Stadium in Sydney. The Socceroos were going to the World Cup for the first time since 1974. He went on to represent his country again in the 2010 World Cup, as well as featuring in two AFC Asian Cups (2007 and 2011).

In 2009, Schwarzer was awarded a Medal of the Order of Australia. He will be remembered as player who contributed immensely, during the most successful period in Australian football history.
