Michael Cockerill reported on football in Australia for more than three decades. In 2011, he was inducted into the Football Federation Australia Hall of Honour, for outstanding off-field contributions to football.

Cockerill was the authoritative voice of football in The Sydney Morning Herald and provided lead commentary for FOX Sports Australia's coverage of the A-League (previously, C7 Sport and the National Soccer League). He was the consummate professional, well-networked and always held public figures in the world game to account.

His book, Socceroos: the Long Road to the Top, was published in 1998 and focused on events in Australian football from November 1996 when Englishman Terry Venables was appointed coach of the Socceroos. It is a great read - just like his columns in the Fairfax media.

On 31 August 2017, Cockerill passed away, aged 56. He will be remembered as one of Australian football's true believers.
