Milan Ivanovic was one of the most accomplished defenders to play in Australia and his exploits for Adelaide City in the National Soccer League became legendary. Ivanovic came to Australia from Yugoslavia in 1989, having played for Red Star Belgrade, where he won two Yugoslav championships and one Yugoslav Cup.
He was an instant hit in the NSL, partnering in defence with Alex Tobin. The pair shared success for club and country - securing NSL championships in 1992 and 1994. Ivanovic retired from professional football in 2000 and is still widely regarded as one of the finest and most influential imports to grace an Australian football field. His teammates called him, the Doctor.
Ivanovic made 300 appearances for Adelaide City, scoring two goals, and represented Australia in 59 A-internationals between 1991 and 1998. His skill in defence played a major part in FIFA World Cup qualification campaigns for the Finals in 1994 and 1998, missing out in the last round in each. Socceroos coach, Terry Venables, did not select Ivanovic for the second-leg World Cup qualifier against Iran in 1997 - a decision many to this day believe was the difference.
This design celebrates the career of Ivanovic - a Yugoslav, playing for a club with Italian heritage, who called Australia home.
