On 1 July 2019, Australian Mark Milligan signed for Southend United Football Club. The club competes in the English Football League One. Known as "The Shrimpers", a reference to the area's maritime industry, Southend immediately installed Milligan as captain for his pedigree.
Milligan spent a large part of his career playing in Australia for Sydney FC, Newcastle United Jets and Melbourne Victory, where he won two championships. He also spent time in Japan, the United Arab Emirates, Saudi Arabia and China.
After a season in Scotland with Hibernian, Milligan moved to Essex. His versatility in defensive roles has led him to play across the backline, mainly as a centre-back, and later as a defensive midfielder. Milligan has been equally versatile for his country.
He has featured in four FIFA World Cup campaigns - the youngest player selected in Guus Hiddink's 2006 squad. In 2015, Milligan was a key member of the AFC Asian Cup team, which won the tournament 2-1 in extra-time against Korea Republic. Milligan replaced Mile Jedinak as captain of the Socceroos in 2018.
This design celebrates Milligan's move to Southend, incorporating his beloved number five.
