Miloś Degenek is part of a new generation of Australian defenders. Born in 1994, Degenek is from Knin, located in the Dalmatian hinterland near the source of the river Krka, an important traffic junction on the rail and road routes between Zagreb and Split, Croatia. His family was part of the Serb population of Croatia and fled the Croatian War of Independence to Yugoslav and Serbian capital Belgrade in 1995, during Operation Storm, where they lived as refugees.
His family emigrated to Australia when he was a child, like many Balkans, looking for a settled life. Degenek attended Westfields Sports High School and later, the Australian Institute of Sport. Germany's VfB Stuttgart selected him to join their Under-19s squad in 2012.
Degenek's senior career took flight in 2015 when he was signed by TSV 1860 Munich. The 2. Bundesliga side (second division), was his home for two seasons before moving to Asia. In 2017, he signed a contract with Japan's J1 League side, Yokohama F. Marinos. He made 37 appearances, scoring two goals.
A dream move to Serbia's Fudbalski klub Crvena zvezda (FC Red Star Belgrade) in 2018, would only last a season, as Degenek signed for Saudi Arabia's Al-Hilal FC on a three-and-a-half year deal. After 11 appearances for the Saudi club, he was back at Red Star.
In 2019, Degenek helped his club qualify for the UEFA Champions League, scoring in the team's crucial 2-2 first-leg away draw against Switzerland's BSC Young Boys. A 1-1 draw in the second-leg was enough for the Serbian powerhouse to go through on aggregate. The 1991 European Cup champions have over 48% of support in Serbia.
Degenek made his debut for Australia against England 2016. He was selected in the FIFA Confederations Cup squad the following year, and a part of the 23 who travelled to Russia for the 2018 FIFA World Cup. He scored his first international goal for the Socceroos against Oman in an international friendly in the United Arab Emirates later in the year.
This design recognises the rise of a dedicated footballer who realised his dream, playing in the Champions League, and in the green and gold of Australia.
