In 1967, four days after winning a seventh English league title, Matt Busby's Manchester United embarked on a triumphant post-season tour. The United squad had never travelled as far as Australia but there was no moaning. In the players' eyes, it was a big adventure.
United played eight matches in Australia. The tour was sponsored by W.D. and H.O. Wills, a cigarette company, which would never be the case today. United goalkeeper Alex Stepney joked, "Most of us smoked, so we were happy about it. They kept our supplies up!"
In Sydney, the State's best were assembled to take on United. It was a rainy Sunday afternoon with most of the play dominated by the English visitors. The match ended 3-1. United's superstar captain, Bobby Charlton, scored twice with Bill Foulkes netting the other. New South Wales captain, Pat Hughes, scored for the home team.
The Red Devils would go on to win the club's first European Cup (now UEFA Champions League) the following season. This design features the names of some of the greatest players in the history of Australian and English football.
