The A-League became the first top-level domestic football competition in the world to implement the Video Assistant Referee (VAR) system when Melbourne City FC hosted Adelaide United at AAMI Park in 2017. The use of VAR may be called on by the referee to provide assistance on four categories of match-changing decisions/incidents:

  • Goal/no goal decisions
  • Penalty/no penalty decisions
  • Direct red cards (not second yellow cards)
  • Mistaken identity

To say its implementation has been problematic would be an understatement. Many current and ex-players, coaches and pundits have called for its removal from the game. If you sit in the no VAR camp, this design is for you.
