The 1999/2000 National Soccer League season was the Wollongong Wolves' 20th. The club had appointed Nick Theodorakopoulos to the post as coach with former Socceroos goalkeeper, Ron Corry, as his assistant.
Theodorakopoulos guided the Wolves to the runners-up position. A significant achievement in his first season. However, no one could have predicted the Wolves' momentum in the finals.
Perth Glory defeated the Wolves in the major semi-final, sending the southern New South Wales club to contest the Preliminary Final against Carlton. A 2-1 victory in Wollongong put the Wolves into the Grand Final.
The Grand Final, without exaggeration, would go down as arguably one of the best seen on Australian soil. The Wolves would face Perth again.
Down 3-0, the Wolves rallied back to 3-3. Incredible scenes insued. After extra-time, a penalty shootout would decide the encounter that most tipped Perth to win. Paul Reid slotted away his penalty, leaving young James Afkos to his turn. Afkos missed and the Wolves were champions!
It was time to party in Wollongong, as the championship was the club's first. This design marks the occasion and all the blood, sweat and tears along the way.
