"Whenever there is action, whenever there is a forward move, expert ball play, a brilliant pass or beautiful goal scored, then I reflect upon those days when I was playing myself. I am proud of having been part of the Australian soccer scene for so many years."
Leopold Baumgartner was born in Vienna, Austria, in 1932. Baumgartner would become one of Australian soccer's pioneers when a tour of the country with his club FK Austria in 1957, laid the foundations for a new life in a "happy" country.
Baumgartner played soccer for a number of the biggest clubs in New South Wales, including Prague, Canterbury, South Coast, APIA and Hakoah as well as representing NSW with distinction. In fact, he served as captain and coach of the First State. He came to be known as the "Little Professor" of soccer for his insightful play.
He will be remembered as a born entertainer on the field, a leader off it, and a family man with a great sense of community. This retro jersey represents an era of State-based soccer rivalries, new Australians - none more so than Baumgartner - dominating the scene and of course, the mighty Blues. On the back, Baumgartner's number 9 in the style of the day.
