"Peter Wilson was, in my mind, our greatest ever captain."
There is no better authority on the success of Australia's first FIFA World Cup team than coach, Rale Rasic. The task of choosing the captain for the 1974 tournament was not without controversy. Many believed the armband should have gone to Australian soccer hero, Johnny Warren. However, Rasic was certain. It would be Peter Wilson.
"Football-wise, he was such an intelligent player in a tactical sense. During a game he only had to make eye contact with me and he knew instantly what I wanted," said Rasic.
Wilson made 65 appearances for the Socceroos. He gave everything for his adopted country, moving to Australia from England in 1969 at the age of 22. A born leader, Wilson will be remembered as the Socceroos' first World Cup captain.
This design features Wilson's lasting words of inspiration across an overlay of his greatest international matches. On the back, his iconic number three in the seventies World Cup-style.
