One of the most significant debates in Australian football is the expansion of clubs in the A-League (W-League) and how to establish a promotion and relegation system. Both parts make up one, at times, polarising debate. However, expansion is one its way (2019/2020) and with the A-League becoming independently owned and operated, pro/rel is on the agenda.
Most would agree pro/rel is a matter of when, not if, in Australian football. Could this be a few years away? Could it be 10? Should the top State-based team be promoted? Should the bottom-placed A-League team be relegated? Should it be two?
To create a national divisional system, where clubs across the country have something to aspire to (a luxury most European, South American and Asian countries take for granted) would be a huge step forward for the game. Pro/rel for Australia is about professional players, semi-professional players, the women's game, the grassroots and the development of the sport as a whole.
