In 1955, Rapid Austria toured Australia. The Rapid squad included the great Gerhard Hanappi, who went on to help his team win the Austrian Bundesliga and qualify for the first European Cup the following season. Rapid enjoyed convincing victories during their tour but for the last match, the Australians winning 3-2 in Sydney.
Austria's classiest team opened the eyes of Australians to the best of continental football. One year out from the Melbourne Olympics, the Australians needed all the competition they could get.
Rapid were still at a peak in 1955 from which they would soon fall, and they returned to Austria full of praise for conditions in Australia and helped persuade rivals FK Austria to make the journey in 1957. Australia gained from some of the fallout in Austrian football with players who came to play in Australia a few years later, albeit with complications that were to lead to Australia's expulsion from FIFA.
This design marks one of the earliest European club tours to Australia.
