Robert "Robbie" Slater was born on 22 November 1964 in Lancashire, England. Slater moved to Australia as a youngster and forged a career as a professional footballer. He was an influential player for the Socceroos, with 44 caps from 1988 to 1997, usually playing on the right wing.
In 1983, Slater won the National Soccer League championship with St George Saints. He moved to Sydney Croatia in 1987, where he stayed for two seasons before signing for Belgian First Division A club, Royal Sporting Club Anderlecht. He went on to play in France for Racing Club de Lens from 1990 to 1994. His big break came in 1994, when he signed for Blackburn Rovers, becoming the first Australian to win the Premier League. His title-winning teammates included Tim Sherwood, Colin Hendry, Graeme Le Saux, Alan Shearer, Chris Sutton, Henning Berg and David Batty.
Slater signed for Harry Redknapp's West Ham United the following season. He also had stints at Southampton and Wolverhampton Wanderers before moving back to Australia to captain newly formed NSL club, Northern Spirit. He would play with them until his retirement in 2001.
His autobiography, The Hard Way, was published in 1999. He has worked as a football media pundit since hanging up his boots. Known for not mincing his words, Slater is a regular contributor to FOX Sports' football programming.
Additional highlights include Oceania Footballer of the Year in 1991 and 1993. Slater was inducted into the Football Federation Hall of Fame in 2005.
