In 1972, Brazil's Santos Futebol Clube arrived in Australia to play the Socceroos on 17 June. A crowd of almost 30,000 turned up to the Sydney Sports Ground to see the world's greatest player, Pelé. Santos, in all white, were seen as strong opponents for the Socceroos in preparation for the 1974 FIFA World Cup in West Germany.
Orlando Pereira scored first for Santos only for Jim Rooney to equalise three minutes later. One-all at the break. In the second-half, Pelé took a free-kick to assist Edu, who scored to make it 2-1. The Socceroos were not going to accept defeat. Five minutes later, the irrepressible Ray Baartz equalised.
The match ended 2-2 and was a great success on and off the field. This design marks a time in football history when superstar, Pelé, brought his world renowned talent to Australia.
