The World of Soccer Cup was the idea of English entrepreneur Reg Lambourne, Strata Travel owner Tom Lawrence and Red Star Belgrade's secretary general Dr Miroljub Stojkovic, which consisted of two competitions. The first (also known as the Metro 20th Anniversary Tournament) was a straight knockout in Singapore. The second, hosted by Australia, was a mini-league in which the top two teams would play in the Grand International Final.
Red Star took the honours in Singapore, while Celtic delivered in Australia. It was the last trophy manager, Jock Stein, would lift for the Bhoys. The tournament was a success and Celtic were impressed by the prize money.
Peter Ollerton, Dave Harding, Murray Barnes and a young John Kosmina impressed for the Socceroos. A 3-1 victory over the Gunners was the highlight for the green and gold.
