In Australia's opening match at the 1974 FIFA World Cup against East Germany, Socceroos striker Adrian Alston, executed a move that would be made famous only five days later by Dutch maestro, Johan Cruyff. The Netherlands played-out a scoreless draw with Sweden on 19 June, where Cruyff's identical play became part of football folklore.
Had Alston been as famous as Cruyff, perhaps today the technique would be called the Alston-turn instead of the Cruyff-turn, as the Socceroo did it first.
