John Kosmina was somewhat of an unknown quantity when he arrived in London from Adelaide in March 1978. He cost Arsenal just £20,000. By that point, he had a successful international career with Australia, but only National Soccer League experience at club level.

As it happened the young striker made only one league appearance during his time at Highbury, as a substitute in a 2-all draw with Leeds United on the opening day of the 1978/79 season. Kosmina featured three times in the UEFA Cup campaign, starting once in the 2-1 defeat at Hajduk Split in October. The Socceroo came off the bench in the return leg but could not prevent the Gunners from losing in the next round at Red Star Belgrade.

After a brief stint in north London, the striker returned home, signing again with West Adelaide before heading to Sydney City and Sydney Olympic. Kosmina was prolific in the NSL, finishing as top goalscorer in the 1982 season.

He won 60 caps for the Socceroos, scoring 25 goals and becoming an icon of the eighties.
