The concept of the China-Australia Ampol Cup was directed to the achievement of two primary objectives. Firstly, to assist and encourage the soccer teams of both countries to compete against each other, and secondly, to develop further the strong relationships that already exist between the People's Republic of China and Australia.
The inaugural Ampol Cup match was played in the city of Beijing on 3 November, 1984. The People's Republic of China defeated Australia 3-2. In 1985, Brisbane's Lang Park played host on 27 September. Australia won 3-0 - captain John Kosmina, Oscar Crino and Joe Watson scored. Two matches preceded, in Canberra (2-0) and Sydney (1-1), where coach Frank Arok trialled his B-teams.
This design features both squads and on the back, the year, in full eighties style.
