The eleventh season of Australia's National Soccer League began in celebration of 10 years of top flight soccer around the country. Only since 1977, had Australia embarked on a national soccer competition. The season format was returned to a single league of 14 teams instead of the two-conference system.
Sydney City (Hakoah), having contributed to the success of the NSL for a decade, withdrew after Round 1, reducing the competition to 13 teams. APIA Leichhardt were crowned champions and Heidelberg United were relegated to the 1988 Victorian Premier League.
Marconi-Fairfield's Frank Farina was Player of the Year and top scorer with 16 goals. The Coach of the Year was none other than APIA's Rale Rasic. An icon of the game.
This design is a reminder of the early days of national soccer in Australia and the clubs brave enough to back the vision.
