A design highlighting Australia's first FIFA World Cup appearance. The draw took place on 5 January 1974 in Sendesaal des Hessischen Rundfunks, Frankfurt, West Germany. The television broadcast was followed by an estimated 800 million people.
Eleven-year-old boy, Detlef Lange, a member of the Schöneberger Sängerknaben (children's choir) drew the names. The great sensation of the draw was the meeting of the two German teams in the first group. The group also featured Australia and Chile.
Australia lost 2-0 to East Germany, 3-0 to West Germany and drew 1-1 with Chile. West Germany lost to East Germany, but went on to win the tournament, defeating the Netherlands by two goals to one.
